Support your community in choosing a healthy lifestyle this Holiday season

Get Fit Taos KidsWhat is Get Fit Taos Kids?
– A comprehensive healthy eating and active living intervention program that provides education and treatment for obese children/youth and their families in Taos.
– Targets children 8 through 14 with high risk for health problems stemming from obesity
– A collaboration of pediatricians, nurse practitioners, fitness & swimming experts, nutritionist, diabetes counselors, Medicaid public health, Holy Cross Hospital, families and children in rural New Mexico
– The physical activity component of Get Fit Taos Kids is a six week, supervised exercise, swimming and nutritional training program that meets once a week after school

“The key to the success of this program is that we offer a variety of activities and formats to get kids excited about exercising,” said Aura Garver, co-founder of Get Fit Taos Kids and owner of Aura Fitness. “We ask kids who have completed the program to become mentors for the new kids, which serves to empower them and extends the time that they are active with us. Kids learn how important it is to make long term investment in their health now so they don’t have greater health issues as adults. This program teaches them to build a foundation of healthy lifelong habits.”

The Challenge
Childhood obesity is at an all time high – nearly quadrupling in 30 years. One-third of New Mexico’s five year olds were either overweight or obese in 2011.

What we see in clinics and patient rooms
High blood pressure, high cholesterol and high blood sugar in children in their first years of grade school

What we know
Healthy eating and physical activity are two lifestyle choices that help prevent obesity

Join us on Saturday, November 23 for this year’s Taos Turkey Trot…for fun, for movement, for physical activity, and to support your friends and neighbors in choosing a healthy lifestyle to help prevent obesity in our community.

Taos Cross Country State Champs

Boys and Girls Taos Cross Country Team Are State Champs!

Taos Tigers by Rohm Padilla

Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Taos Cross Country Team for winning the State Championship!

Reported from the Taos News

Taos High School dominated the state cross-country Saturday (Nov. 8) in Río Rancho.

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers won team titles at the championship, and both teams easily out-distanced themselves from the state runners-up.

The Lady Tigers won with 44 points while second-place Sandia Prep finished with 82 points.

The Tigers won with 57 points. St. Mike’s finished second with 91 points.

“We came in knowing that if we gave everything we had we’d come away with (the state title),” Cade Cannedy said.

The Lady Tigers had four runners finish in the top-10 — Haley Rach (4th), Cora Cannedy (6th), Hannah Gunther (8th) and Lucia Costanza (9th). Taos’ fifth runner, and final point scorer, was Elizabeth Reyes finishing 17th, but Isabella Padilla (23rd) and Elicia Sánchez (35th) both finished high enough that they could have been Taos’ four and five runners and the team could have still won the title.

The Tigers’ story was similar. Three Tigers finished in the top-10 — Donevan Gravelle (3rd), Roy Madrid (4th) and Mateo Vigil (9th). Cade Cannedy finished 19th and Tristan Padilla placed 23rd — and all five of them had sub-18 minute times. JC Santistevan placed 44th and Theo Hummel finished 45th, meaning either of their scores could have been Taos’ fifth and the Tigers still would have won the state title.

“I feel lucky to run for this team,” Padilla said.

Taos Integrated School of the Arts Trains for the Taos Turkey Trot

The fourth grade class from Taos Integrated School of the Arts (TISA) has been busily involved in a special P.E. project. For the last few weeks we have been training for the Taos Turkey Trot. Our class will enter under the team name “TISA Trotters”. Our goal is to walk/jog the entire distance and to finish the race as a team. We have been working with parent volunteers at Kit Carson Park on Friday afternoons. We have been working on concepts such as teamwork, positive self-motivation, gradual training, and the importance of stretching, warming up, and pacing. We are learning about health and nutrition, and are excited to participate in a project that will help other young people in the community do the same thing. We will integrate the arts be creating team tee-shirts that represent what TISA is all about.

We encourage TISA staff and families to join us in this fun event!

Roots and Wings Community School

Roots & Wings Community School Trains for Turkey Trot

Roots & Wings is a charter school in Lama, NM where students learn through thematic units (or Expeditions). This fall we are studying the human body with a focus on digestion and how food affects the body.  As part of our semester theme, our 4th, 5th, and 6th graders will be training to compete in the Third Annual Taos Turkey Trot 5K.  We will be practicing weekly and eating the right foods to help us complete this race and we encourage all local students to come compete with us.

There are a few different ways to support us in our endeavor:
Walk or Run with us
– Be a spectator and cheer us on
– Visit our booth after the race at the Taos Youth & Family Center. We’ll be selling snacks made from our healthy snack recipe book. Let us show you what we’ve been doing to train for the Turkey Trot.
– Like us on Facebook

We look forward to seeing you!
